UTSA Alumnus Joaquin Guzman Named US Official by Sports Association | UTSA today | UTSA

To be selected to officiate at the NIRSA Basketball National Championships, officials must receive an offer based on their performance at one of the NIRSA Basketball Regional Championships held across the country. Whether regional or national, each tournament has a committee of officials made up of professionals in the field from various universities. Each student official is evaluated at each game, and the committee provides feedback to help students improve their future performance.

Guzman received a bid for the NIRSA Regional Basketball Championships held at the University of Missouri in February 2023. He finished as the tournament’s top official and was selected for nationals across the United States along with two other official UTSA students, Jared “E” Morris and Matthew Baham.

In April, at the NIRSA National Basketball Championships at the University of Maryland, Guzman officiated eight games in three days. Due to his excellent performance, the NIRSA Officials Committee selected him to officiate in the Men’s National Intramural Championship game.

After the game, NIRSA recognized Guzman as one of nine U.S. officials, out of a total of 51 student officials who have officiated at national basketball championships.

“I’m honored to receive this award, but more importantly to represent UTSA,” Guzman said.

Guzman is the third UTSA student to receive NIRSA All-American honors after Adreanna Broussard in 2015 and Fernando Perez in 2022. He thanks Michael Castaneda, Assistant Director of Athletic Programs, and Cy Fondal, Former Coordinator of Athletic Programs , for helping him achieve this goal. honor.

“Those two people shaped me to be the best official and professional in and out of sports programs,” Guzman said.
