Registration is now open for a first summer camp and a Returning Student Support Workshop offered next month by the University of Southern Mississippi College of Nursing and Health Professions.
The Sports Training Student Aid Workshop, for all high school and undergraduate students interested in sports medicine, will be held June 10-11. Participants must register before June 1st. Health Professions Summer Camp is scheduled for June 15 for all high school students. Participants must register by June 5.
Here are the details of the two events:

The popular workshop, which first took place in 1978, returns after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are thrilled to be able to bring back the Sports Training Student Support Workshop,” said Dr. Melissa Kossman, director of the School of Health Professions at USM. “Over the years, many of our alumni began their relationship with USM through this workshop and applied to our undergraduate program because of it. These former students have gone on to do amazing things and many of them are now coming back and teaching in the workshop because they care so much about it. Now that sports coaching is a masters-level degree, that connection is even more important early on to keep students interested and to continue to engage them with new material as they attend their own schools’ sports programs before they can start the actual program.
USM Athletic Training Program Coordinator Dr Leslie Oglesby added: “The workshop has been around as long as the athletic training program itself and provides valuable knowledge and skills to future athletic trainers. . I hope the workshop will continue to grow year by year.

Dr. Kossman notes that this is the first time USM has offered the Health Professions Summer Camp.
“There are so many paths students can take to pursue careers in healthcare. However, many of these options are not widely known or understood,” Dr. Kossman said. “The goal of this camp is to engage students early on who know they want to help people in some way, but are still figuring out the best path they want to take. Students will be exposed to hands-on activities from each of our respective degree programs (Athlete Education, Physical Therapy, Public Health, Recreational Therapy, and Sports Medicine) to learn more about each career option and gain fundamental knowledge about how to pursue careers at USM.
