Rio Ferdinand has described Anthony Gordon as the ‘crown jewels’ and explained what the Everton star needs to do to force a move to Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are ready to pay around £60m for the 21-year-old who is said to be ready to join Chelsea as he wants to play in the Champions League.

Gordon became a regular in Frank Lampard’s side last season and made 64 appearances in total in all competitions, scoring just five goals.

He has scored once in Everton’s first four Premier League games this season, scoring in the 1-1 draw with Brentford on Saturday.

Everton have already lost one of their best strikers this summer, with Tottenham signing Richarlison, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been injured so far this season.

That left Gordon in the lead, as he has generally been seen as a winger in his fledgling career thus far.

When asked if £60million was too much money for Chelsea to spend on Gordon, Ferdinand said on YouTube: “Is it worth it?” Probably not now.

‘Could he possibly be worth £60m? Potentially, he has the chance to do so. This kid is the crown jewel at Everton right now.

“They don’t want to see him go because of what it will do for the morale of the football club and the fans at the stadium.”

“It’s difficult but if he wants to go he has to come in and show the balls to go to the manager and the chairman and say ‘I want to leave’ and see how they handle it.”

Former defender Nedum Onuoha, meanwhile, has questioned Chelsea’s move for Gordon and believes the move doesn’t make sense.

“At the moment I couldn’t put him in this Chelsea team and see where he fits,” he said. ESPN FC.

“Playing for Chelsea, where you’re expected to win every game, and if you don’t win two games in a row it’s a mini crisis, I think you need a strong mentality to deal with that pressure. I’m not sure Anthony Gordon is right now.

“He doesn’t fit this current style of play. [Callum Hudson-Odoi] is like another version of Anthony Gordon, and he can’t get on the team.
