Researchers identify lack of credentialed computer science professors

Researchers have identified the lack of accredited computer science teachers as a barrier to broadening participation in the subject.
The report from the University of Galway found that Ireland is experiencing a major teacher shortage, with maths, engineering and new Stem subjects such as computing among the most difficult vacancies to fill.
He revealed that there were only 34 accredited computer science teachers before the start of the school year, in August 2022. The researchers said that a total of 140 people are involved in teaching the computer program. computing in secondary schools, with the vast majority doing so without teaching. Board Accreditation. He revealed that graduate studies in computer science were limited by the low number of post-primary schools offering coding for the Junior Certificate.
The Capacity For, Access To, And Participation In Computer Science Education In Ireland report also identified a gender gap in the subject as 70% of Leaving Certificate computer science students in 2022 were male, while 60% of students in junior cycle coding were boys. Dr Cornelia Connolly, senior lecturer at the School of Education at the University of Galway and lead author of the report, said: “We are a long way from making this important 21st century subject accessible to all students.
“The report also highlights the need for the Irish education system to embed much more digital skills and IT development in schools if we are to ensure the continued digital transformation of the economy.”
The researchers also found a low level of understanding of the importance of computing among students and teachers.
