New mobile app helps customers save money and reduce food waste

A new triple threat mobile app has debuted in San Antonio. Too Good To Go allows users to save money, fill their bellies and help eliminate food waste at area restaurants with just a few clicks.

The Denmark-based company partners with restaurants to offer deals — some as cheap as $3.99 in San Antonio — on bags full of food that restaurants would otherwise throw in the trash at the end of the day. . Too Good To Go launched in Europe in 2015 and hit US soil in 2020. This month, the brand expanded its footprint in Texas with a presence in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Too Good To Go has been operating in Austin since 2021 and currently works with over 450 restaurants and other businesses across the state.

“We are excited to expand our app across Texas to partner with the vibrant culinary scene and culture,” Chris MacAulay, director of Too Good To Go, said in a press release. “Partnering with the amazing local food businesses of Texas, we want to make reducing food waste accessible to everyone. Together with the amazing restaurant community and residents of Texas, we know we will have an immediate impact.”

The Too Good To Go mobile app is free. Most orders are around $5 per bag.

Users generally won’t know exactly what each order contains, as restaurant inventory can fluctuate at the end of each day. The app offers so-called “goodie bags” at a steep discount from the restaurant’s normal retail prices that can be picked up by customers.

Compost Queens: The Compost Queens of San Antonio are pulling food from landfills to replenish the earth

Currently, only a small handful of restaurants in San Antonio participate in the program. Recent offerings include desserts from Baklovah Bakery & Sweets and Alebrije Bakery, dishes from Zaatar Lebanon Grill, A Way To The Heart and Pasha restaurants, and groceries from Indian Supermarket, among others. Prices ranged from $3.99 to $12.

According to Too Good To Go, approximately 133 billion pounds of food worth around $161 billion is wasted in the United States each year. Since its beginnings in this country, Too Good To Go claims to have saved more than 5.5 million meals from landfills by working with more than 11,000 companies here.

The Too Good To Go app is available on iOS and Android platforms. More information and participant registration can be found at toogoodtogo.com.
