Leonardtown Celebrates 9th Anniversary of Being Appointed as an Arts and Entertainment District

Leonardtown, MD— September marks the 9e Anniversary of Leonardtown receiving its designation as an arts and entertainment district. It has the honor of being the only A&E district in southern Maryland. The City will mark the anniversary with a series of exciting happenings and happenings throughout September, including concerts, art exhibits, sidewalk art, outdoor events and more. Again!

Kicking off the festivities with Art Walk 2022 on Friday, September 2n/a starting at 5 p.m. on the first night of the A&E First Friday All Weekend Celebration. Visit participating local businesses around town to see fabulous artwork by local artists and vote for your favourite, then stop for dinner in town at one of our excellent restaurants before heading out to Leonardtown Square to enjoy live music provided by Upper Standards. Jazz Trio from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The fun continues in Town Alley on Park Avenue (across from the Good Earth Natural Foods Store), where we’ll be celebrating Leonardtown’s newest and most unusual mural titled “Alice in Leonardtown” from 7:30-10:00 p.m. with balloons. , arts and crafts and themed activities – golf with flamingos courtesy of Above Par Golf & Entertainmentgames with the White Rabbit character, and dress up as your favorite Lewis Carroll character and have your picture taken with Alice from Leonardtown (courtesy Ron Bailey Photo Productions). After the grand opening, we’ll screen the beloved classic animated film about a young girl who embarks on a WONDERFUL journey (can you guess the movie?). The film will be projected against the magnificent mural, created by talented artists Dan Ropp and Tom Rogers, which also serves as a cinema screen. This event is the first of many fabulous evenings of outdoor film screenings planned.
Then Saturday, September 3rd, the beautiful Leonardtown Wharf is the perfect place for a day of creativity and fun. The day starts with the 1st Annual sidewalk art competition where established and aspiring local artists are invited to use the sidewalks of the wharf as a backdrop for their artwork. Register for FREE at [email protected] Where [email protected] in one of four categories (Youth, Amateur, Family or Pro) to enter for a chance to win over $400 in cash prizes and gifts. Participants will be able to work at their own pace by checking in anytime between 10am and 3:30pm – taking as much or as little time as needed to complete their work. Judging will take place at 4 p.m. and the winners will be announced at 5 p.m. during the evening concert at the dock.
The concert is the thrilling season finale of the musical series On the Water’s Edge at Leonardtown Wharf. This exciting series, sponsored by Jimmy Hayden of RE-MAX 100 and Homes for Heroes, is part of the Leonardtown Summer Music Festival. The finale, which will take place from 3-7 p.m., is a Labor Day weekend featuring local favorites the Robbie Boothe Band, John Zimmerman and Billy Breslin. In addition to amazing live music, attendees can sample wine from Port of Leonardtown Winery, beer from Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Departmenttasty dishes from Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliaryand sweets from Frog City Ice Cream. As indicated, we will name the winners of the Curb Art competition earlier in the day during the concert at 5 p.m. (just before Robbie Boothe took the stage).
