Lady Cards takes two from Tyler

April 1—As March prepares to give way to April, Cardinal’s softball team is in full swing.
The Cardinals swept a Region XIV Conference doubleheader against Tyler Junior College on Wednesday afternoon at Drumgoole Field in Cain Park to extend their winning streak to four games. They were 3-0 winners in the first game and took a 4-3 decision in the second.
The sweep improved the Cardinals to 21-19 on the season and 2-4 in the conference.
The wins also put second-year head coach Maria Winn-Ratliff within one win of his 750th career win.
The Cardinals are expected to be at home on Saturday in a doubleheader against Kilgore College. The action starts at 1 p.m.
Here is a recap of Wednesday’s matches:
GAME 1
Rawnie Weststrate commanded in the circle. She pitched seven innings, scattering eight hits and striking out six on the shutout.
Lena Sellam led the Cardinals in a five-hitter effort, going 2-for-2.
Karlie Cook, Kaitlyn Corn and Weststrate (doubles) got a single each.
The Cardinals scored two goals in the third and one in the fourth.
GAME 2
The Cardinals were error-free and made the most of six hits to complete the sweep.
Rosemary Rivera and Yasmine Derbal had two hits apiece to lead the Cardinals to home plate. Derbal had a double.
Hannah Pacheco also scored a brace.
Nicole Stuhr walked the distance in the circle. She allowed six hits and struck out six.
The Cardinals won the game in the bottom of the fifth, putting three runs on the scoreboard.
