CIF Southern Section Individual Section Preliminary Results May 18 at Andulka Park Tennis Centre: Claremont singles players Caleb Settles (Palomares League champion) and DJ Brownlee (Palomares League runner-up) were rewarded in the first round.
In the second, Caleb beat Ryder Hermansen of Yucca Valley (Desert Valley League champion), 6-1, 6-0, before defeating Ethan Lee of Los Osos (Baseline League champion), 6-4, 6-2, in the third. DJ beat Corona Centennial’s Ishaan Gupta (Big VIII League runner-up) in the second round, 6-0, 6-1, then Los Osos’ Brandon Hsiung (Basic League runner-up), 6-0, 6-2 , in the third.
The Wolfpack doubles team of Lance Lao and Mateen Ghafarshad (Palomares League champions) were also byes in the first round. Lance and Mateen won 6-0, 6-1 against Vista Del Lago’s doubles team of Inland Valley League champions Tyler Cortez and Manreet Guraya, then swept Palm Desert’s Jack Thompson and Shaurya Mahajan (champions of the Desert Empire League) 6-0, 6-0 in third. All CHS players qualified for the CIF Southern Section Individual Championship Tournament, which took place Tuesday and Wednesday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont. Caleb had a first-round bye Tuesday morning, then lost to Corona del Mar Surf League finalist John Cross in the second round, 6-4, 7-6 after three tiebreakers.
DJ started Tuesday by beating Westlake’s Kimi Basamakov (Marmonte League champion) in the first round, 6-0, 6-3, then won by default in the second before defeating Martin Luther King Big VIII champion Ronith Sreem. High School, in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-1. On Wednesday, Peninsular Sean Ferguson (Bay League champion) beat DJ, 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Lance and Mateen’s doubles team had a first-round bye on Tuesday, then beat Murrieta Valley Southwest League champions Aiden Hever and Owen Pearson 6-4, 6-3 in second. They then capped off the day by beating Peninsula doubles players Christopher Koeberle and Kyle Shigekawa (Bay League champions), 3-6, 7-5, 10-4 in the quarter-finals. On Wednesday, Lance and Mateen lost 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals to eventual tournament champions University High Pacific Coast champions Sanghyuk Im and James MacDonald. Results of the May 20 CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at Moorpark: Denise Jie Yi Chen finished eighth in the 3,200-meter race at 10:48.45. L’Mio Edwards took third place in the 800 in 2:09.82 and will qualify for the CIF State Championships. The women’s relay team of Denise, L’Mio, Isla Bulmer and Kaitlyn Smith won the 4×800 with a time of 9:07.84. The four are Claremont’s first-ever CIF SS Track and Field Masters Champions 4×800 relay women’s team and will qualify for the CIF-State Championships in Clovis. Next up will be the 103rd CIF State Athletics Championships at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in Clovis. The qualifying events start on Friday and the finals on Saturday. The information is on cifstate.org.

CIF Southern Section Individual Section Preliminary Results May 18 at Whittier Narrows Tennis Club: Singles player Webb Morgan Qiu (San Joaquin League champion) defeated Johnny Su, Valle Vista League runner-up West Covina, in a grueling first round match, 6-3, 4-6, 12-10. He then beat Summit’s Andrew Cisneros (Sunkist League runner-up), 7-5, 6-2, in the second round. Diamond Bar Hacienda League champion Solon Chi Chit Au then ended Morgan’s run in the third round, 6-1, 6-0.
Gaul’s doubles team of Ryan Weigand and Larry Zhou (San Joaquin League champions) lost in the first round to Colin Kennedy and Andrew Kurgan of Harvard-Westlake (Mission League finalists), 6 -0, 6-1. San Joaquin League runners-up Ben Thien-Ngern and David Liu opened the first round by sweeping Edgewood’s Miramonte League champions Omar Millan and Sebastian Morada 6-0, 6-0, then fell against Ethan Nguyen and Kayvon Kasravi of San Marino.
