Google’s Tensor 3 chip will be powered by Samsung’s 3nm technology

According to a recent rumor, Samsung will start manufacturing Tensor 3 on his 3nm pattern. Thereby, Google will not change its custom line of Tensor SoCs to TSMC soon.

The Korean The company would eventually start using its current technology to mass-produce chipsets for smartphones, as the company had begun distributing the first batch of 3nm GAAs to customers. According to Business Korea, Tensor 3 will likely switch to Samsung’s 3nm technology in 2023.

Google is developing the third-generation Tensor with Samsung Electronics’ System LSI division. The mobile hotspot will be used for the Pixel 8 smartphone, which is slated for release in the second half of next year.

Despite its current focus on GAA 3nm, Samsung plans to start producing goods for various customers using its second-generation 3nm GAA technology. For those unaware, the upgraded Node offers notable improvements over Samsung 5nm technology, including up to a 50% reduction in energy consumption, 30% increase in performance, and 35% size reduction.

However, as Samsung is not expected to start using the second generation model until 2024, Tensor 3 will likely be mass-produced using first-generation 3nm GAA technology. Nevertheless, progress is to be expected in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro in terms of power efficiency as Samsung claims that its 3nm GAA chips will reduce power consumption by up to 45 percentimprove performance by 23 percentand minimize the area by 16 percent compared to the manufacturer’s 5nm technology.

A recent report suggested that Samsung aims to improve the production of 4nm fries. TSMC will start mass-producing chips using its 3nm technology early next month. According to Economic Times Daily, the Korean automaker plans to invest more than $3.8 billion in its facilities to make this possible.

With tech giants in a race for global dominance, Samsung Foundry and TSMC are continually improving their facilities and manufacturing processes to surpass themselves. It is interesting to see how both companies will play their part in the technological advancements of times to come.
