Darke Co. General Health District Offers Free Narcan To Some Opioid Users – WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio

DARKE COUNTY – The Darke County General Health District is offering free Narcan to select residents.

The Darke County General Health District posted on Facebook that the department would be distributing Narcan for free to certain opioid users.

To qualify, the department gave the following guidelines:

Previous opioid intoxication or overdose. History of non-medical use of opioids. Initiation or discontinuation of methadone or buprenorphine. High prescription of opioids.

Opioid users who meet the guidelines should also receive an opioid prescription plus one of the following:

Switching from one opioid to another due to possible incomplete cross-tolerance. Smoking, COPD, emphysema, asthma, sleep apnea, respiratory infection or other respiratory disease. Kidney dysfunction, liver disease, heart disease or HIV/AIDS. Concomitant consumption of alcohol. Concomitant prescription of benzodiazepines or other sedatives. Concomitant prescription of antidepressants. Patients who may have difficulty accessing emergency medical services (distance, remoteness).

A voluntary request from a family member, friend, peace officer or other person in a position to help a person who has reason to believe they are at risk of an overdose related to opioids can also be made.
